Gem Beasts

Looking Towards the Future – Force of the Breaker

The Gem Beasts

In Season 3 of Yu-Gi-Oh GX, a new duelist arrives at Duel Academy wielding a set of rare and powerful monsters – the Gem Beasts. These Jewel Beasts are very unique compared to other types of monsters because these beasts are not sent to the graveyard when they are destroyed – in fact, they become gems in one of the duelist’s spell or trap card slots. The controller can then use a variety of cards in order to take advantage of these ‘jewels’. I must admit that I’m very excited about these cards, and I’m sure that they be very popular when they come out.

These are the various ‘Gem Beasts’:

Gem Beast Amethyst Cat

EARTH/Beast - Effect/3/1200/400

This card can attack your opponent directly. If it attacks using this effect, the Battle Damage it inflicts to your opponent is halved. If this card is destroyed, you can place this card face-up in 1 of your Spell & Trap Card Zones; it is treated as a Continuous Spell Card.

Gem Beast Amber Mammoth

EARTH/Beast/4/1700/1600
When a monster that includes [Gem Beast] in its card name on your side of the field is targeted for an attack, you can change the attack target of that attack to this card. If this card is destroyed, you can place this card face-up in 1 of your Spell & Trap Card Zones; it is treated as a Continuous Spell Card.

Gem Beast Topaz Tiger

EARTH/Beast - Effect/4/1600/1000
If this card attacks, this card gains 400 ATK during the Damage Step. If this card is destroyed, you can place this card face-up in 1 of your Spell & Trap Card Zones; it is treated as a Continuous Spell Card.

Gem Beast Emerald Turtle

WATER/Aqua - Effect/3/600/2000
Once per turn, you can change 1 monster on your side of the field that has attacked this turn to Defense Position. If this card is destroyed, you can place this card face-up in 1 of your Spell & Trap Card Zones; it is treated as a Continuous Spell Card.

Gem Beast Sapphire Pegasus

WIND/Beast - Effect/4/1800/1200
When this card is Normal Summoned, Flip Summoned, or Special Summoned, you can place 1 "Gem Beast" monster from your hand, Deck, or Graveyard face-up in 1 of your Spell & Trap Card Zones; it is treated as a Continuous Spell Card. If this card is destroyed, you can place this card face-up in 1 of your Spell & Trap Card Zones; it is treated as a Continuous Spell Card.

Gem Beast Ruby Carbuncle

LIGHT/Fairy - Effect/3/300/300
When this card is Special Summoned, you can Special Summon as many "Gem Beast" monsters from your Magic & Trap Card Zones as possible. If this card is destroyed, you can place this card face-up in 1 of your Spell & Trap Card Zones; it is treated as a Continuous Spell Card.

Gem Beast Cobalt Eagle

WIND/Winged Beast/4/1400/800
Once per turn, you can return a card with [Gem Beast] in its name on your side of the field to the top of your deck. If this card is destroyed, you can place this card face-up in 1 of your Spell & Trap Card Zones; it is treated as a Continuous Spell Card.

There is also the Rainbow Dragon, but it comes in a set after Force of the Breaker.

Other cards in the set can also take advantage of the Gem Beasts, but they don’t relate very well, so let’s just stick to the Gem Beasts.

What would be the point of keeping your Gem Beasts in the spell/trap card zone if you couldn’t use them in any way? That’s why they have these support cards:

Gem Guidance
Magic - Normal
When there's 2 or more [Gem Beast] cards in your Magic & Trap card zone, special summon a [Gem Beast] monster from your deck.

Rare Value
Normal Magic Card
Activate only if there are at least 2 "Gem Beast" monsters in your Magic & Trap Card Zones. Your opponent selects 1 "Gem Beast" monster from your Magic & Trap Card Zones. Send the selected monster to the Graveyard, and draw 2 cards.
Ultra/Ultimate Rare

Gem Blessing
Normal Magic Card
Select up to 2 "Gem Beast" monster in your Graveyard. Treat the selected cards as Permanent Magic Cards and place them in your Magic & Trap Cards zone.

Gem Abundance
Magic - Normal
Send 4 [Gem Beast] from your Magic & Trap Card zones to your Graveyard to activate this card's effect. Send all cards on the field to the Graveyard. Afterwards, equal to the amount of cards sent from the opponent's field to the Graveyard, Special Summon that amount of monster with [Gem Beast] from your Graveyard onto your field.

Gem Contract
Magic - Normal
Special Summon 1 monster card from your Magic & Trap Card Zone that includes [Gem Beast] in its name.

Ancient Rainbow City - Rainbow Ruin
Field Magic Card
This card accumulates effects according to the number of "Gem Beast" monsters in your Magic & Trap Card Zones. At least 1: This card cannot be destroyed by effects that destroy Magic Cards. At least 2: Once per turn, you can halve the Battle Damage inflicted to your Life Points by 1 of your opponent's monsters. At least 3: Send 1 "Gem Beast" monster from your side of the field to the Graveyard to negate the activation and the effect of a Magic or Trap Card and destroy it. At least 4: Once per turn, during your Main Phase, you can draw 1 card. 5: Once per turn, during your Main Phase, you can Special Summon 1 "Gem Beast" monster from your Magic & Trap Card Zones.

Last Resort
Normal Trap
Activate only when your opponent declares an attack. Activate 1 "Ancient Rainbow City - Rainbow Ruin" from your Deck. At that time, if there is a face-up Field Magic Card on your opponent's side of the field, your opponent draws 1 card.

Gem Prayer
Normal Trap
This card can only be activated by sending a [Gem Beast] in your Magic & Trap Card Zone to the Graveyard. Destroy 1 card on your opponent's side of the field.

Gem Flash Energy
Trap - Continuous
During each of your Standby Phases, inflict damage to your opponent's Life Points equal to the number off face-up Permanent Magic cards on the field x300.

Probably the best thing about the Gem Beasts is that it is easy to keep advantage with them. For instance, if your opponent decides to use Smashing Ground or Sakuretsu Armor, it’s no big deal – you just turn your Gem Beasts into Gems in the Spell/Trap Zone, and your opponent loses one advantage. You could always use Giant Trunade to return them to your hand and re-use them. Later on, you can turn these jewels into even more advantage with the cards Rare Value and Rainbow Ancient City – Rainbow Ruin. Here’s an example of how you gain advantage:

You have one Gem Beast – Ruby Carbuncle in the spell/trap card zone. It is now your turn, and your opponent has a face-down card.

1. You summon Gem Beast – Amber Mammoth

2. The opponent activates Trap Hole and destroys Amber Mammoth

3. You get back the Mammoth in the spell/trap card zone (+1 advantage to you)

Here’s another example:

You have two Gem Beasts in your spell/trap card zone

  1. You first summon Gem Beast – Sapphire Pegasus and use the effect to add a Ruby Carbuncle to your hand from the graveyard. (+1 advantage to you)
  2. You activate Rare Value and a Gem Beast in your spell/trap card slot is destroyed, but you draw 2 extra cards.
  3. Activate Gem Blessing in order to retrieve two Gem Beasts from your graveyard and place them onto the field (+1 advantage to you)

And one last scenario that demonstrates the amazing ability of the Gem Beasts:

You have four Gem Beasts in your spell/.trap card zone and your opponent has 3 spell/trap cards and 2 monsters on the field.

  1. You activate Ancient Rainbow City – Rainbow Ruin
  2. You use the effect to draw an extra card (+1 advantage to you)
  3. you activate Gem Abundance, sending the four Gem beasts on your side of the field to the grave to destroy all cards on the field. You then summon five Gem Beasts onto the field in attack mode (+4 advantage)

I think I’ve gotten my point across. What I mean is, the Gem Beasts are pretty darn awesome, and they are GREAT at gaining advantage. I just can’t wait for them to come out so that I can get my hands on them.

Well, until next time! I’ll be back with another article on the other awesome cards in the Force of the Breaker pack!
